“Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes but they don’t quit.” – Conrad Hilton
For a few months now we have talked about the need to have positive expectations. To be UP, to be sure about our business and to have no doubts. Yes, there are the “frightening news of the world,” they are there EVERY week … Our conclusion? NONE OF THIS MATTERS.
We as real estate investors are in our own universe. A universe around which everything swirls … We are the eye of the hurricane … the calm in the storm. The anchor. The rock! We believe in home ownership. We believe in the value of being a real estate investor.
Sure, there will be some people going broke, some real estate being over valued some investors not making it (non-REAG members!) … BUT there will be some who make NEW HIGHS. In fact, for most of us – who are focused – the more confusion out there, the better we do.
Because we just do the things we need to do … We stay focused. Centered. Firmly believing in our future, our ability to cope, and our ability to lead ourselves into a better future BEST!
Our clients, our family, our employees want to know that YOU are certain … about this world, the future.
Of course – it is important to realize that nothing ever happens without action.
Remember – all achievers are action oriented.
They put the ‘I’LL DO IT TODAY’ into their plans. Everybody dreams of things that he or she hopes will come true one day … but achievers make their dreams actual goals.
Each goal has an action plan attached and each action plan is acted upon.
Human beings don’t like to write things down … remember…? But how can you have a goal and a plan of action without a measuring stick – the written measurable action plan?
Dreams without actions to make them come true are merely big ideas … Certainly if a dream is worth thinking about; it merits the effort to make it come true. All that is needed is a plan and – you guessed it – action, follow up and follow through.
REAL ESTATE INVESTOR ACTION THOUGHT THIS WEEK:
I know I didn’t do it. I do not have my goals written down. Or … I have them written down, but I do not do what I said I would do. Here is the secret of the ages … From now on write down only what you will actually do. Sounds simple … but it IS the secret.
This week, I will rethink my goals. If they still are worthwhile achieving and my life would be better for achieving them, I will review my action plan. If my action plan was worthwhile, but I didn’t do it, or I did it only sometimes I will start with a fresh new plan. A plan that I will live up to.
This week I will re-write my action plan from scratch … BUT I WILL ONLY WRITE DOWN THE THINGS I ACTUALLY WILL DO!
You may find that if you are honest with yourself, that if you only wrote down what you will actually did do, you’ll fall short of your stated goal achievement.
Review your goals … drop some of them if necessary or get back to your action plan and WRITE DOWN THE THINGS YOU WILL DO TO ACHIEVE THOSE WORTHWHILE GOALS. That is to say, you COMMIT to do whatever you write down – or you don’t write it down.
There is nothing worse than having finely thought out goals and actions written to achieve them and THEN NOT DOING IT!
Write down one tough thing you will start with tomorrow morning. Make your deal with yourself come alive:” I’ll swear that what I have written down I will do.”
If after the end of this week, you find you don’t do what you have written down, throw your plan away. YOU WILL NEVER DO IT, you only fool yourself, your goals are not real enough to you, your commitment to yourself isn’t real to you …
You will always stay at this level …
If everybody could make a million/buy the best deals/have the cash flow – they would … But guess what … you need personal action to get that million, more money, a new spouse … ACTION, ACTION, ACTION to do the things that losers don’t like to do … and winners do, because it gets them the things they want out of life.
THIS WEEK I WILL FACE THE FACTS. I WILL CHANGE INTO ACTION!
“It is better to be making the news than taking it; to be an actor than a critic.”
I’ll put this on my car visor today:
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
– Abraham Lincoln
IDEA OF THE WEEK
Common Direct Mail Mistakes (2 today)
The following may be hard to believe but successful direct mail doesn’t depend on fancy, four-color design or “creative” copy. It isn’t the fanciest brochure that brings results.
Mistake No. 1: Ignore this at your peril.
Not understanding the most important part of your direct mail campaign. You may think it is the copy, or the layout, or the colors. Wrong. It also is not the art work or first class mail versus third class mail. We mentioned it before … It is ALL IN THE MAILING LIST.
A FINE direct mail package, with excellent copy and design, might pull double the response of a poorly planned one. But the best list can pull a response 10 times more than the worst list for the identical mailing piece!
Think about, whom you send your mail to. By owners? Expired owners – tried and did not make it? Foreclosure lawyers? Foreclosure Realtors?
The most common direct-mail mistake is not spending enough time and effort up-front, when you select – and then test – the right lists.
- Lists can be bought from a list broker.
Lists of businesses in your area,
lists of moving companies,
and families with children,
condo owners etc.
- A targeted list is worth its proverbial weight in gold.
- Even a general mail out ‘farm area’ package will work better in an area where people have been proven to move more often.
- In direct marketing, a mailing list is not just a way of reaching your market. It is the market.
- Of course the best list is your own. A list of customers and prospects that previously bought from you or responded to your ads or other mailings. This is the best list but 98 in 100 people never send ongoing repeated mail to the people that already bought from them.
Mistake No. 2: Not using a letter in your mailing package.
A personal letter – not the outer envelope, the brochure, or even the reply form – is the most important part of your direct-mail package. A package with a personal letter in it will always out pull a postcard, a self-mailer, or a brochure mailed without a letter.
Personal letters create the illusion of personal communication. We are trained to view letters as “real” mail, brochures as “advertising.” Which is more important to you?
Try an old-fashioned sales letter first. Go to a fancier package once you start making some money. Oh and don’t have a fancy copywriter. Write in your own words, your style, just like you would talk to someone … it is far more effective.
